Nietzscheana - Sammlung Dite

- Schaberg 23a. - Schaberg, All Things Nietzsche, Kat. 16, S. 10-16. - Slg. Borst 3194. - Jacobi, S. 51. - Volpi, S. 758f. - WNB 350. - Wilpert-Gühring 2. - Zimmermann 21. "Strauss's book was the incarnation of the Zeitgeist with its unproductive smugness, intellectual snobbery, superficial assimilation of great works of art and new scientific theories, myopic criticism and patronizing praise for even the greatest genius." (Schaberg, S. 14).

Philosophy and Sociology – First edition, first printing of the first part of Nietzsche's "Betrachtungen", including the "Berichtigungen" leaf, which is often missing. Bound in a contemporary cardboard covered in veined paste paper, with a handwritten title and library call number on mounted paper labels on the spine, as well as mint-green speckled edges (worn and bumped).- For references see above. - The first work in a publication project originally planned by Nietzsche to comprise 13 texts on the social, philosophical, religious and economic issues of the time, formulated as a scathing critique of the 1872 work "Der alte und der neue Glaube" (The Old and the New Faith) by the theologian, philosopher and writer David Friedrich Strauss (1808-74). "Strauss's book was the incarnation of the Zeitgeist with its unproductive smugness, intellectual snobbery, superficial assimilation of great works of art and new scientific theories, myopic criticism and patronising praise for even the greatest genius." (Schaberg, p. 14). - 1,000 copies of the first were printed by C. G. Naumann in Leipzig on behalf of Fritzsch. Even after several years, only 517 of these had been sold. The remainder was sold and/or repurchased by Fritzsch and later by Nietzsche's second publisher Schmeitzner following their respective bankruptcies and finally by Naumann, and distributed by them as reissued edition (with the old publisher's details covered by a new label, with the actual publisher's stamp or with a new title page), which is why only about half of the print run entered circulation with Fritzsche's original, unaltered title page like present. - Provenance: Ex-libray copy from the Hindenburg University, Nuremberg, with the institution's stamp on the title page and p. 101, a cancellation stamp on the title page, and a few notes, mostly in pencil, on the endpapers and title page. - Some minor staining. Overall, a solid copy of this early publication by Nietzsche.
