Jenseits von Gut und Böse. Vorspiel einer Philosophie der Zukunft. Leipzig, Naumann, 1886. VI S., 1 Bl. (Inhaltsverz.), 182 S., 1 Bl. (Inhaltsverz., Druckverm.) Gr.-8°. Halbleder der Zeit mit goldgeprägtem typographischen Rückentitel, mittels gezogenem Marmorpapier überzogenen Deckeln, Vorsätzen aus Modeldruckpapier und rotem Kopfschnitt (Rücken an den Enden stärker beschabt, Gelenke an den Kapitale aufgeplatzt, Ecken und Kanten bestoßen, beschabt).

(Schaberg) Eins von nur 600 Exemplaren von Nietzsches polemischer Kritik an den herrschenden Moralvorstellungen, die er zuvor in "Also sprach Zarathustra" poetisch formuliert hatte, Nietzsches erste auf selbstverlegte Publikation, für die Naumann nicht nur als Drucker, sondern auch als Kommissionsverleger fungierte. - Provenienz: Handexemplar von Hermann Mutschmann (1882-1918), Prof. für klassische Philologe in Königsberg und davor Assistent in Berlin bei Willamowitz-Moellendorf, mit dessen Besitzereintrag "E. Herm. Mutschmann stud. phil." in Tinte auf dem Titelblatt und zahlreichen eigenhändigen Anstreichungen, Anmerkungen und Korrekturen mit Bleistift. - Einige Seiten in den weissen Rändern gering finger- und schmutzfleckig, papierbedingt gleichmäßig gebräunt, sonst wohlerhaltenes, in zwei Rändern unbeschnittenes Exemplar.
Philosophy and Sociology – First edition of Nietzsche's most accessible work, and therefore the one with the greatest impact. Bound in contemporary half-leather with a gilt typographic spine title, boards covered with ploved marbled paper and endpapers of of block printed paper (spine, head, corners and edges slightly rubbed).- For references see above. - "By any standard, 'Beyond Good and Evil' is among the greatest books in Western culture." (Schaberg) One of only 600 copies of Nietzsche's polemical critique of prevailing moral concepts, which he had previously expressed poetically in "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", Nietzsche's first self-published work, for which Naumann acted not only as printer but also as commission publisher. - Provenance: Personal copy of Hermann Mutschmann (1882-1918), Professor of Classical Philology in Königsberg and, prior to that, assistant to Willamowitz-Moellendorf in Berlin, bearing the owner's inscription "E. Herm. Mutschmann stud. phil." in ink on the title page, and containing numerous handwritten underlinings, notes and corrections in pencil by this former owner. - A few pages show very slight finger and dirt stains in the white margins, the paper is evenly time-stained due to its nature, otherwise a well-preserved copy, uncut at two of the edges.
