Der Fall Wagner. Ein Musikanten-Problem. Zweite Auflage. Leipzig, Naumann, 1888. 4 Bl. (Tit., Vorw., Zwischentit.), 57 (1, Druckverm.) S. Gr.-8°.
Nietzscheana - Sammlung Dite
Philosophie und Soziologie – Erste Ausgabe der Kritik Nietzsches an Wagner als Komponist des Stechschritts "germanischer" Militarisierung, mit verändertem Titelblatt. - Schaberg 54 und S. 213ff. (mit Abb. auf S. 215). - Schaberg, All Things Nietzsche, Kat. 16, S. 34. - Borst 3766. - Krummel XVII. - Jacoby S. 57. - Zimmermann 42.
Philosophy and Sociology – First edition, first issue with altered title page of Nietzsche's critique of Wagner as the composer of the 'Germanic' militarised mentality. Contemporary red cloth with a gilt typographic title on spine (slightly soiled, with minimal scuffing to the corners.) - For references see above. - Since the 1860s, Nietzsche had been engaged with Wagner's music and persona, initially as an admirer and friend, and ultimately as a critic, indeed an enemy, of the composer, whom Nietzsche in present essay portrayed as the 'Germanic' commander of an obedient audience 'with long legs'. This dispute was to culminate only a few months later in the pamphlet "Nietzsche contra Wagner". - One of only 500 copies with an altered title page, on which the year of publication has been removed and the misleading addition 'Second edition' added. - Naumann printed a total of 1,000 copies at the same time, 500 of each with the two different title pages. The actual second edition was not due to appear until 1891. - Title page with a barely visible handwritten annotation in pencil, a few sections have been slightly reinforced in the fold, with a few minor finger marks here and there. Overall, an exceptionally clean copy in a highly collectable condition.
