Kapuziner-Orden
Literatur des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts – VD17 23:236084E. - Erste Auflage. - Mit einem hs. Besitzvermerk eines Lieb-Frauen-Stiffts, sowie einem Besitzstempel der Bibliothek Sti. Michaelis, E.N.Y. Thieme/Becker XXII, 73). - Ränder leicht gebräunt. Stockfleckig. Insgesamt gut erhaltenes Exemplar dieser ersten Ausgabe.
Literature of 17th to 19th Century – With a portrait of Francis of Assisi and an engraved title page. Contemporary pigskin binding over four raised bands, featuring elaborate roll-tooling and fillet lines, a handwritten title on the spine, and two metal clasps (rubbed and bumped, minimal worming, one clasp missing). - First edition. - Includes a handwritten ownership inscription from a collegiate church of Our Lady (Lieb-Frauen-Stifft) and an ownership stamp from the St. Michaelis Library, E.N.Y. - Colophon leaf featuring the magnificent printer's mark of the Johann Baptista Mayr workshop. - A detailed account of the history and origins of the Capuchin Order, presented in a very fine contemporary binding. Covers the period from the beginnings in 1525 to the year 1574. The Capuchins (OFMCap)-properly known as the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin (Ordo Fratrum Minorum Capucinorum)-are a Franciscan mendicant order within the Roman Catholic Church, their name derives from the distinctive hood (capuche) of the Franciscan habit. They belong to the Franciscan orders and today constitute-alongside the Friars Minor (OFM) and the Conventual Franciscans (OFMConv)-one of the three major branches of the First Order of St. Francis. Historically, the Capuchins distinguished themselves from the other two branches of the order's family through a special devotion to silence and prayer, as well as through their closeness to the common people and the poor. In the modern Capuchin community, this is expressed through active engagement in pastoral care for marginalized groups and in social-pastoral projects (such as work with the homeless). (Wiki). Three further parts were published up to 1690, all are exceptionally rare on the antiquarian book market. The engraved frontispiece (portrait of Francis of Assisi) and the magnificent engraved title page opposite-featuring an allegorical depiction-are each signed in the plate "M. Küsell". This refers to Melchior Küsel (1626-1683), a pupil of Matthäus Merian the Elder, who was active in Frankfurt, Augsburg, Munich, and Vienna (cf. Thieme/Becker XXII, 73). - Margins slightly browned, some foxing. Overall, a well-preserved copy of this first edition.
