Lot 783 Carl Rahl. Hogarth's Kupferstiche in 62 …

Hogarth's Kupferstiche in 62 Blättern. Titelbl. mit Inhaltsverzeichnis und 62 Tafeln. Wien, Sammer, ca. 1840. Quer-4°.

Jahrhunderts kompakt Hogarths gesellschaftskritische Bildsatire. - Titelbl. etwas fleckig u. knittrig, hinterlegt, sonst nur vereinzelt etwas fleckig.

Literature of 17th to 19th Century – From the library of Victor von Klemperer, with his bookplate. - A rare set of plates after William Hogarth's (1697-1764) celebrated satirical engravings, in reduced, etched reproductions by Carl (Heinrich) Rahl (1779-1843), the Viennese court engraver and father of the later, more famous history painter of the same name, Carl Rahl (1812-1865). The plates were originally created to illustrate Georg Christoph Lichtenberg's "Ausführliche Erklärung der Hogarthischen Kupferstiche" ("Detailed Explanation of Hogarth's Engravings"), which appeared as a reprint from the Viennese publishing house Kaulfuß und Armbruster in 1818-1823, initially comprising 50 plates. Around 1835, the Viennese publisher Rudolph Sammer acquired the remaining stock, and once it had sold out, brought out an expanded new edition of the plate sequence alone, now increased to 62 etchings and issued as a stand-alone pictorial work without the accompanying Lichtenberg text - the present, commercially rare edition. The plates render Hogarth's original engravings - among them cycles such as "A Rake's Progress" and other moralizing pictorial sequences by the English master - at roughly half the size of the originals, thereby conveying Hogarth's socially critical pictorial satire in compact form to the Continental European public of the nineteenth century. Title page somewhat spotted and creased, with a backing repair, otherwise only isolated light spotting.
