It contains afternoon discourses between a prince and seven learned men on intemperance in eating and drinking. The group of scholars consists of a theologian, a canonist, a jurist, a politician, a physician, a moral philosopher and a historian. Each of the seven disciplines explains why excessive eating and drunkenness are harmful. What makes the work unusual is that it does not treat the subject only in theological and moral terms, as a sin. The physician explains the physical damage, the jurist and the politician the social and legal consequences of drunkenness, and the historian supports their arguments with examples from history. - Browned, name and stamp on title page.
