Literature of 17th to 19th Century – First edition. - In 1643, Johann Bollandus began publishing the biographies of all the saints, examined from a documentary, historical, and critical perspective. This work was continued by numerous collaborators, who were called "Bollandists" in his honor. - See ADB 3, p. 109 - This massive project to scientifically and critically examine all the historical biographies of Christian saints met with fierce resistance from other religious orders (especially the Carmelites and Dominicans). They viewed traditional legends as threatened by the Jesuits' source criticism. This volume collects all the defensive treatises (apologies) written by the Bollandists. It served as an official work of justification dedicated to Pope Benedict XIV. - Blind-embossed calfskin strap, currently with 5 holes and remnants of the clasp (discreetly restored), slightly scuffed. - Name on the inside cover, a short note on the endpaper, overall, a good, very clean copy.
