Kunstgewerbe - Möbel - Drechslerei

Kunstwissenschaften – Brunet I.785 - Zweite erweiterte Ausgabe dieses hervorragend illustrierten Handbuchs fur Drechsler.

Science of Art – Arts and crafts - furniture - woodturning. - With engraved title and 96 (8 col., 41 double sheet size, 5 folded) copper plates. - Second extended edition of this superbly illustrated woodturner's manual. The Manuel du tourneur is regarded as the most important and comprehensive instructional work on the art of turning (tour à pointes, à lunettes, en l'air, guilloché, eccentric, oval and epicycloid turning) from the period around 1800, and it was used throughout the 19th century as the standard reference for cabinet-turners, ivory- and metal-turners, and for courtly and scientific turning craft alike. Originally published by the author himself in 1792-1796 under the pseudonym "L.-E. Bergeron," the present second edition of 1816 - considerably enlarged and improved over the first - was issued by Hamelin-Bergeron in Paris, edited by Pierre Hamelin-Bergeron, son-in-law of the actual author, Louis-Georges-Isaac Salivet. The technical section on turning proper is preceded by extensive chapters on the study of woods, joinery, forging, tempering, and metal casting - an indispensable foundation for the practical training of "amateurs," which also makes the work an important source for the history of technology in the early 19th century. The accompanying atlas volume contains a total of 96 engraved plates (39 in part I, 57 in part II), many of them folding or double-page, depicting tools, lathes, mechanisms, and finished works in wood, ivory, and metal in great detail. The first eight plates show various species of timber and are, as is customary in the finest known copies of this edition, finely hand-coloured in the period, which further underscores the quality and decorative appeal of the present copy. The present copy is distinguished by its uniform, decorative contemporary binding of red half morocco with richly gilt spine, as well as by its generous, wide margins - qualities that, for this sought-after standard work of technical history and bibliophilic interest, are rarely found together in such fine condition. A wide-margined and largely clean copy. - Broad margins and largely clean copy.
