Kunstgewerbe

Kunstwissenschaften – Nicht bei SMPG, Ornamentale Vorlagenwerke d. 19. Jahrhunderts. - Gutes Exemplar.

Science of Art – With 26 lithographed, partly chromolithographed folio plates after designs by Max Graef, architect for interior spaces in Erfurt. Weimar, Voigt, 1894. Folio. Loosely inserted in the original publisher's half-cloth portfolio, with printed title-shield mounted on the front cover, with ties. (Corners bumped, spine-ends slightly rubbed/frayed.) - Not in SMPG, Ornamentale Vorlagenwerke d. 19. Jahrhunderts. - First edition. This plate-work belongs to the rich genre of late-Wilhelmine decorative-arts and pattern-book publications intended to provide the practising joiner and building-carpenter with professional model sheets for the execution of representative shop fittings. It presents designs for the complete interior fitting-out of sales premises - from shop counters and shelving units to display cases, wall panelling, and portal (entrance) design - "for all branches of trade," conceived across industries, in both elegant, elaborate versions and simpler, more economical ones. In addition to the large-format general views, sections, elevations, mouldings/profiles, and enlarged details supply the constructional information needed for craftsmen to execute the designs in the workshop. The work appeared at a time when shopfitting in Germany was rapidly becoming professionalised: from the 1870s onward, the large-scale display window became established in city centres, and with the rise of department stores and an expanding bourgeois consumer culture, demand for representative, artistically designed sales spaces grew considerably. Max Graef, who worked as an architect for interiors in Erfurt, catered - through a whole series of similar pattern-books, such as "Altdeutsche und gotische Zimmermöbel" (1895), "Geschnitzte Möbel" (1896), and later "Möbel im Art Nouveau" - specifically to the demand of the building-joinery and art-furniture trade for up-to-date models, illustrated either at natural size or to scale. The present publication on shop-interior fitting-out takes its place within this ouvre and exemplifies the elevated Historicist, or incipient Art Nouveau taste in German shopfitting of the 1890s, as repeatedly discussed and advertised in contemporary trade journals such as the "Blätter für Architektur und Kunsthandwerk." - Fine copy.
