Lot 612 nach Jean-Michel Grobon. L'Ile-Barbe vue de …

L'Ile-Barbe vue de Saint-Rambert. 19. Jhdt. Aquarell und Gouache auf J. Ruse 1801-Velin (m. Wz.). 25 x 38,2 cm.

Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd. – Zeitgenössische Kopie nach dem gleichnamigen Ölbild von Jean-Michel Grobon, Vgl. Tomaselli Collection Lyon. - Abb. in: La peinture lyonnaise au XIXème siècle, Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier & Etienne Grafe, 1995, S. 49.

Paintings, drawings and prints 16th to 19th century – Watercolour and gouache on J. Ruse 1801 wove paper (with watermark). - Contemporary copy after the oil painting of the same name by Jean-Michel Grobon, cf. the Tomaselli Collection, Lyon. - Ill. in: La peinture lyonnaise au XIXème siècle, Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier & Etienne Grafe, 1995, p. 49. - A historically idealised river landscape depicting the Abbey of Île Barbe on the Saône near Lyon, looking towards Saint-Rambert. The painting depicts the ruins of the old abbey, a favourite subject of Grobon's at the start of his artistic career. - The abbey was founded as early as the 5th century on the rocky island of Île Barbe, Insula Barbara ('wild island'), and in the Middle Ages was one of the largest and most important monastic complexes in the region. Plundering by Protestant troops during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century led, in the 18th and 19th centuries, to the gradual abandonment and eventual ruin of the building. From then on, the site developed into a popular destination for leisure and day trips. The former abbey, conveniently situated on the trade routes between Italy and Northern Europe, has become a favourite subject for numerous travelling artists in modern times. In our depiction, the Saône winds its way broadly along the wooded valley, with the abbey set against a cloud-covered sky. On the right bank stands the massive, stone, multi-storey monastery building with a square, soaring tower, round arches reflected in the water, a small round tower and flat roofs. In the foreground are a few bathers serving as decorative figures. The striking round arches hold particular significance, as they formed the unloading point for food supplies destined for the monks working at the abbey. - Slight crease mark on upper left middle and in lower left corner, very few slight handling traces, pinholes in corners and upper middle margin, slightly cut in margins, veryo few slight handling traces, slightly buckled in two corners, partly closed marginal tears to recto, small loss of paper on upper left, isolatedm hardly visible tears on lower left, isolated, faint-brown stains, partly hardly seeping through onto verso, few small traces of mounting at bottom, all in all very good. Colours fresh.
