Theology and Religious Studies – Romania - Transylvania - Philipp Caudella. Choral-Buch für die Kirchengesänge der christlichen Gemeinden A. C. in Siebenbürgen (Hymna) for the Church Songs of the Christian Congregations of the Augsburg Confession in Transylvania). Mit zweckmässiger Begleitung und Einleitungs-Accorden (With suitable accompaniment and introductory chords). Hermannstadt. Published and available at the K.K. Priv. Lithographic Institute, 1823. 64 pp., lithographed throughout (text and music). Contemporary marbled boards, front cover with mounted paper label. Oblong folio (340 × 265 mm). Binding rubbed. - Not in Schwarz, Lithographie in Österreich. - No further copy could be traced in the relevant union catalogues (KVK, OCLC), which points to a remarkably rare surviving witness of early Transylvanian lithography and church-music history. - Philipp Caudella (1771-1826), a native of Moravia trained in Vienna under, among others, Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, came to Transylvania in 1814, initially working as music tutor to the Wesselényi family in Kolozsvár (Klausenburg/Cluj), and in 1817 was appointed choirmaster (regens chori) at the Catholic parish church as well as professor of music at the Protestant gymnasium in Hermannstadt (Sibiu). Commissioned by the consistory of the Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession in Transylvania, Caudella created a new, four-part harmonized hymnal comprising some 100 chorales (melody in the soprano), which was reproduced in 1823 at the recently founded Hermannstadt Lithographic Institute - the first hymnal edition in Transylvania produced by lithography. With its interludes between verse lines, characteristic of the period, the work remained in practical use among the Transylvanian Saxon Protestant congregations until 1898, and at the same time established a practice of organ accompaniment to the chorale that continued to shape the Protestant Church in Transylvania well into the 19th century. Alongside Anton Hubatschek, Caudella ranks among the leading musicians of his generation in Hermannstadt, besides this hymnal, he composed motets and church music for choir, concertante organ and orchestra (including "Cantate Domino," "Protector noster," and "Vias tuas, Domine, demonstra mihi"), and in 1823 also produced the first piano method printed in Transylvania. - A fine copy of this rare imprint with wide margins.
