Deutschland - Norddeutschland
Dekorative Graphik - Karten – Frühe, breitformatige Karte von Niedersachen, Schleswig-Holstein und Mecklenburg aus De Jodes berühmtem "Speculum Orbis Terrarum". - Koemann III, 2100:32. - Ortroy, S. 125/69 u. S. 65. - New Hollstein, Deutecum III/578.
Prints and Engravings - Maps – Early, wide-format copper engraved map of Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg from De Jode's famous atlas "Speculum Orbis Terrarum", Antwerp 1578. - For references see above. - The map, which features additional etching in places and an extensive title headpiece, depicts the region formerly inhabited by Saxon tribes - that is, all of northern Germany from Friesland and Paderborn to Flensburg, Rügen, Stettin, Dresden, and Kassel - but is not intended as a historical map, rather as a modern geographical one: A Hanseatic cog is shown sailing in the Baltic Sea. - A notable feature is that the Stechnitz Canal between the Elbe and Lübeck is shown on a printed map for the first time and the place name Bardowick appears in two different versions. The legendary Vineta is marked off the coast of Usedom. - The white margin shows slight finger staining and soiling in places, with slight time-staining throughout. Overall, a clean, consistently bold, and high-contrast print.
