Geography and Travel – Letter from Lichtenberg (printed), dated Göttingen, 06 January 1777, in which he offers the editors of the Deutsches Museum illustrations made after Hodges for publication 1 folded eng. plate with binding. In: Deutsches Museum, Leipzig, Weygand, vol. 1, no. 2, February 1777, pp. 190-192. Printed original brochure (spine glued, slightly brownstained). First edition. - Very interesting report by Lichtenberg with the folded plate. Plate with depiction of Tierra del Fuego Indians after Hodges. Lichtenberg reports that through Forster he made the acquaintance of William Hodges, who accompanied Cook's 2nd expedition as a painter. Hodges enabled Lichtenberg to copy his Tierra del Fuego drawings, two of which are shown on the copper plate. Cook stopped at Terra del Fuego on his 2nd expedition in December 1774, where he also met the natives and where Hodges made his drawings. The following is a description of Terra el Fuego and its inhabitants based on Lichtenberg's conversations with Forster and Hodges. Summarising the travellers' reports, he writes about the character and fate of the natives that they are characterised by "indifference, stupidity and extreme misery".
