Geography and Travel – Collection of 19 ink drawings (wash and sepia) and watercolors, as well as 32 lithographed plates by E. Bollmann, F. Hohe, C. A. Lebschée, and others, from the estate of Martius. Various formats, mostly mounted on cardboard. Loose in a paper-covered portfolio with a handwritten label reading "Martius Nachlass" (portfolio shows significant rubbing and bumping, some tears at the Corners, spine restored). - Rare. - Part of the estate of the German naturalist and botanist Martius, relating to his "Flora Brasiliensis". - The prints and drawings presented here focus primarily on landscapes. Many sheets bear annotations and captions, likely in Martius's own hand. Two sheets depicting views of Rio de Janeiro and its surroundings are inscribed "Taunay." This likely refers to Adrien Taunay the Younger (1803-1828), a French painter who - according to Rugendas - participated in the Langsdorff expedition to Brazil as chief illustrator. - The lithographed plates depict landscapes from the first part of the "Flora Brasiliensis," the botanical work documenting the major Brazil expedition undertaken by Martius and Spix (1817-1820). Following Spix's death in 1826, Martius assumed sole responsibility for compiling and publishing the expedition report. He continued his botanical research - culminating in the ongoing publication of the "Flora Brasiliensis" - until his death in 1865. - Some slight marginal wear and tears. Some sheets detached from their mounts. Overall, a well-preserved and extensive collection from the naturalist's significant estate.
