Geographie und Reisen – Erste Ausgabe. - Blackmer 1193 - Gernsheim, Incunaula of British Photogr. Lit., 284 - Das Werk dokumentiert Newtons Reisen, Ausgrabungen und Entdeckungen im ägäischen Raum und an der Küste der heutigen Türkei zwischen 1852 und 1859. Der historisch bedeutendste Teil des Werkes ist der detaillierte Bericht über die Lokalisierung und Ausgrabung des Mausoleums von Halikarnassos. Das Grabmal des Königs Mausolos II. gehörte zu den Sieben Weltwundern der Antike. Newton schaffte es, die Fundamente freizulegen und spektakuläre Skulpturenteile (darunter die berühmten kolossalen Statuen und Teile des Amazonen-Frieses) zu sichern. - Vorsätze etwas fleckig, Frontispiz mit Einriß in der Faltung, gelegentlich etwas fleckig.
Geography and Travel – First edition. - An account of the English archaeologist's travels and discoveries in the Levant and Asia Minor from 1852 until 1859. - 2 vols. With 12 (2 folded) maps, 12 mounted photogr plates, 17 woodcut plates and 38 text woodcuts. - The endpapers are slightly stained, the frontispiece has a tear along the fold and is occasionally slightly stained.
