History – Fashion. - Extremely rare. We have been able to trace only a single copy in the international book trade. - A detailed treatise on the wearing and tying of various cravat knots. Following a theoretical introduction to this accessory, the book discusses the different methods of wearing the cravat illustrated on the plates. The text is divided into several theoretical sections and guides the reader from a detailed definition of the accessory, through the requisite stylistic and practical knowledge, to a systematic presentation of the various knots and manners of wearing it. Of particular note are the two long, folding engraved plates, which illustrate numerous variations in the arrangement of the cravat, in the literature, these are sometimes described as distinguishing between "cravates contemporaines ou de circonstance" and "cravates classiques ou anciennes." Other descriptions refer to a total of seventy illustrated ways of wearing the cravat, while the plates may alternatively be described as steel engravings. Context and significance: The book belongs to a wave of short, often anonymous or pseudonymous, manuels and codes published in France during the late 1820s, which treated the cravat as a central element of masculine elegance and social distinction. Chronologically, it follows closely upon works such as Cravatiana (1823) and L'Art de mettre sa cravate (1827), and is a characteristic example of Restoration-period literary fashion advice directed at the homme de bon ton and the fashionable man. Some waterstaining and foxing. Overall, still in good condition.
