Militaria

Geschichtswissenschaften – Prachtvolles Widmungsexemplar. Selten.

History – With 9 large folding engraved copper plates, containing numerous illustrations. Contemporary green morocco binding, smooth spine richly gilt, covers with gilt floral borders, gilt edges. Endpapers covered in pink glazed moiré paper. A magnificent presentation copy. The handwritten inscription to Frederick VI, King of Denmark (1768-1839), was by no means chosen arbitrarily. While still Crown Prince Regent for his mentally ill father, Christian VII (regency from 1784), he supported the Copenhagen gymnastics instructor Franz Nachtegall from 1800 onwards. In 1804, Nachtegall was appointed Professor of Gymnastics at the University of Copenhagen and entrusted with establishing a military gymnastics institute-the first state training institution for military gymnastics instructors in Europe-followed in 1808 by a civilian gymnastics institute for teacher training. Johann Adolf Ludwig Werner (1794-1866) was the first in Germany to introduce gymnastics for girls at his Dresden school, in 1830. Unlike Johann Friedrich Ludwig Christoph Jahn and his followers, he did not base gymnastics on revolutionary-political principles, but on health and educational grounds, this enabled him to continue gymnastics systematically in Germany even during the so-called Turnverbot ("ban on gymnastics"). In 1839, he founded the first German training institution for physical-education teachers. As early as 1817, in the course of his military career, he had been appointed maître dans l'art d'escrime, as fencing master of his regiment and later as a lieutenant in the Saxon army, he instructed all officers in fencing. In 1820, he was additionally appointed fencing instructor at the University of Leipzig. Pages 180-370 deal with every type of fencing exercise, plates V-IX illustrate various fencing exercises on foot and on horseback. Rare.
