Rechtswissenschaften - Law books
Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Third edition of this legal anthology after the printings of 1513 and 1514, published in Basel by Adam Petri in 1517. The title announces "treatises and procedural forms of various kinds from both laws, for the benefit of many students." The collection is thus aimed at students and practitioners of both Roman and canon law (utrumque ius). It brings together, in a single handy volume, texts used in university teaching and in court and notarial practice. The volume opens with an introduction to both laws (In utriusque iuris libros introductorium), followed by a guide to resolving the abbreviations that pervade legal manuscripts and printed books (Modus legendi abbreviaturas in utroque iure). At its core is the Tractatus iudiciorum by Bartolus de Saxoferrato, the "legum doctor," which deals with court procedure. Practical texts follow: a treatise on the renunciation of benefices in public instruments (Tractatus renunciationum beneficiorum in publicis instrumentis) and an Ars notariatus, a manual of notarial practice. The Processus Sathanae infernalis et genus humanum stands in the tradition of medieval fictional trial literature. It has the Devil bring suit against the human race, presenting rules of procedure in narrative form. From Giovanni d'Andrea, the volume contains the Summa on the second book of the Decretals (Summa super secundo Decretalium), which treats ecclesiastical procedural law. In addition there are the genealogical trees (Arbores) of consanguinity, affinity, and spiritual and legal kinship (consanguinitatis, affinitatis, cognationis spiritualis et legalis), which were indispensable for marriage law and the question of impediments to marriage. Bartolus de Saxoferrato (1313-1357) taught as professor of law at Perugia. He is regarded as one of the most important jurists of medieval Roman law and as the foremost representative of the Postglossators (Commentators), a group of northern Italian jurists who wrote on Roman civil law. Famous already in his lifetime, he was later regarded as the greatest jurist since the revival of Roman law. Giovanni d'Andrea (ca. 1270-1348) was the most renowned and successful canonist of the later Middle Ages. His works shaped the teaching of canon law for generations.
