Papier

Jahrhundert

Books on Books, History of Paper and Typography – Title with woodcut coat-of-arms of the Imperial City of Nuremberg. 8 unnumbered leaves. 4°. Two loose folded gatherings (uncut and partially unopened). Last leaf verso: "Decretum in Senatu, den 28. Febr. A. 1690." Slight browning to the outer margins in places, otherwise well preserved. VD17 23:299291G. - Of great rarity, no copy traceable for us on the international market. - Rare official ordinance issued by the Nuremberg city council in 1690, introducing a new, binding paper regulation for the Imperial City, its suburbs, and the surrounding territory. The text sets out in great detail all the features required of official municipal documents: the prescribed watermarks and embossed stamps, the use of the city's coat-of-arms on the paper, the permissible paper qualities, and the prices fixed for them. The document thus stands as an early-modern example of municipal economic and administrative regulation, intended to control and standardize the paper trade and paper production within Nuremberg's territory - an important testimony to the history of paper-making as well as to municipal administrative practice within the Holy Roman Empire at the close of the 17th century.
