Reise- und Erinnerungsalbum. mit 25 (4 ganzseitigen) aquarellierten Handzeichnungen und 4 Bleistiftzeichnungen. Plymouth, ca. 1822. 4°. 1(w), 25 Bll., 2(w), 2 Bll., 1(w), 11 Bll., 1(w), 2 Bll., 1(w), 1 Bll., 44(w) Bll. Blindgepr. Ldrbd. d. Zt. mit Deckelfileten und floraler Eckverzierung, Steh- u. Innenkantenverzierung, dreis., gepunzter Goldschnitt (etwas berieben u. beschabt, Rücken verblasst und unauffällig restauriert).

Manuskripte und Urkunden – Großformatiges Album des bekannten englischen Offiziers, Zeichners und Naturforschers Charles Hamilton Smith (1776, Vrommenhofen - 1859, Plymouth). "Seit seiner Jugend war Smith ein emsiger Beobachter und Zeichner, der sich für zahlreiche Dinge, vor allem historische, naturhistorische und topographische Dinge. Schon früh beschäftigte er sich mit Uniform- und Kostümkunde. Sein Werk Costumes of the Army of the British Empire gibt genaue Darstellungen der zeitgenössischen britischen Uniformen. Auf dem Gebiet der Kostümkunde arbeitete er teilweise mit Samuel Rush Meyrick zusammen. Sein Hauptinter- esse galt jedoch der Naturkunde. Er war mit dem französischen Anatomen Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) befreundet und arbeitet an den vier Bänden zu den Säugetieren des Werkes General and Particular Descriptions of the Vertebrated Animals (1827) mit, das auf einer Übersetzung von Cuvier's Le règne animal basierte. Ferner verfasste er mehrere Bände der von William Jardine herausgegebenen Reihe The Naturalist's Library." (vgl. Wikipedia). Das vorliegende Album zeigt eindrucksvoll sein zeichnerisches Können und bildet einen umfangreichen Querschnitt ab. Sämtliche Zeichnungen stammen von einer Hand und sind, bis auf wenige, betitelt. 4 Zeichnungen, wie für Ihn üblich, hs. monogrammiert "CHS". - Teils etwas gebräunt u. leicht braunfleckig.

Manuscripts – Travel and Memoir Album. With 25 (4 full-page) watercolor sketches and 4 pencil drawings. - Contemporary blind-stamped leather binding with filleted cap and floral corner decoration, raised and inner edge decoration, three-sided, punched gold edging (slightly rubbed and scuffed, spine faded and discreetly restored). - A large-format album by the well-known English officer, illustrator, and naturalist Charles Hamilton Smith (1776, Vrommenhofen - 1859, Plymouth). This album impressively showcases his skill as a draftsman and provides a comprehensive overview of his work. All of the drawings are by the same artist and, with a few exceptions, are titled. Four drawings, as was his custom, are hand-monogrammed "CHS." - Some pages are slightly yellowed and have light brown spots.
