Zoologie - Zoologica Specifica - Arachnologie
Natural Sciences – Zoology - Specific Zoology - Arachnology. - Zoology - Zoologica Specifica - Arachnology - - Ferdinand Hoefer. Collection of five original drawings of spiders and insects from the estate of Ferdinand Hoefer (1811-1878). N. p., n. d. [ca. 1865-1866]. Five sheets in watercolour and gouache, some with underdrawing in pen and pencil, on card or laid down. Three of the drawings are painted on small sheets of paper with clipped corners, mounted on larger backing sheets. Contents: Weevil ("Coléoptère du fruit de chêne"). Dorsal and ventral views of a beetle with a long rostrum. The artist's pencil note says it was found in spring 1866 in a jar of soil, acorns and oak leaves, which he had collected in the woods in October 1865. The genus is not named; it is probably an acorn weevil (Curculio). A second, very faint note at lower right is barely legible. Spider with web measurements. Large watercolour study in dorsal view, accompanied by a small sketch of the spider at natural size. Inscribed "G. M." or "G. N." and "29 Juin", and at lower right "trouvé dans la chambre, 28 Juin". Fine pencil lines show the web's capture threads, with manuscript measurements (including "2 mètres" and measurements in centimetres). "Heliophanus tricinactus" (Koch) / "Erigone longimana". Two spiders in dorsal and ventral view, with threads indicated. The sheet bears a double identification with references to Koch (volume and figure numbers) and the locality note "Dans les terrains humides sous des pierres. Mars." "Linyphia pratensis" (Koch) / "Theridium venustissimum". Two spiders, together with an egg sac and a single leg. Locality note "17 Juin dans la chambre", with references to Koch (volume and figure numbers). "Aptera. Epeira Diadema" (European garden spider, now Araneus diadematus). The most elaborate sheet. It shows three spiders in colour in dorsal and ventral view, and two pen drawings of the upper and lower sides, all set against a finely drawn orb web. The inscription includes a Latin diagnostic quotation ("Aranea oculorum situ lunato") with a German translation. - Johann Christian Ferdinand Höfer (Jean-Chrétien-Ferdinand Hofer; Döschnitz, 21 April 1811 - Brunoy, 4 May 1878) was a physician, lexicographer and historian of science. He is best known as editor of the "Nouvelle biographie générale" (46 vols., 1852-1866) (Wikipedia DE; Massachusetts Historical Society). He demonstrably engaged with the history and classification of spiders and insects in two contexts. In his "Histoire de la zoologie" (1873), Hoefer devotes a separate section to spiders. There he traces how spiders came to be distinguished from insects, first by Brisson and then through Lamarck's class Arachnida. In his account, Aristotle's observations on spiders were taken up again only by Lyonnet, De Geer and Réaumur, and later by Savigny, Dugès and Walckenaer. Elsewhere he explains that Linnaeus placed spiders among the "Aptera" and that they now form "le type de la classe des Arachnides, établie par Latreille". This classification corresponds to the inscription "Aptera. Epeira Diadema" on sheet 5. In his popular nature studies "Les saisons" (1867-1869), Hoefer describes arthropods from the surroundings of his home. One example is a creature from the quarry pools between Montgeron and "les Bosserons (hameau dépendant de Brunoy)". It is first taken for a spider, then identified as an insect larva because it has six legs (Hoefer 1868, pp. 155 f.). He also discusses the harvest mite Leptus autumnalis and whether it belongs among the insects or the arachnids (Hoefer 1868, pp. 290 f.). His cited authorities include Geoffroy, Réaumur, De Geer and Latreille. The present sheets are dated 1865/66 and bear locality notes such as "dans la chambre". This places them close to these studies in both time and subject. Whether Hoefer drew them himself, used them as models, or merely collected them remains uncertain. The works by Hahn and Koch cited on the sheets ("Die Arachniden", 1831-1848) are not mentioned in the "Histoire de la zoologie".
