Natural Sciences – Zoology - Ornithology - Barrière. Les oiseaux de volières et de parcs, avec planches coloriées d'après nature. With 50 colour lithographs. Bordeaux: Imprimerie Nouvelle Typo-Lithographique A. Bellier et Cie, 1886. 120 pp. Contemporary red half leather (somewhat bumped and rubbed). Of the greatest rarity, no copy traceable in the trade. - Not in Ayer/Zimmer. - Not in Copenhagen, Anker, Ellis/Mengel, McGill/Wood, Trinity/Breit, or Yale/Ripley. - Ronsil, L'Art Français, 85. - A splendidly illustrated work on keeping birds in aviaries and parks in late nineteenth-century France. It was printed at the Bordeaux press of A. Bellier et Cie, one of the city's leading lithographic houses, which emerged in the 1870s from the firm "Imprimerie Nouvelle". The volume was conceived as the opening of a multi-volume work. Title and plates bear the designation "Ier volume", and the text ends with "fin du premier volume". No further volumes appeared. A preface is followed by a historical survey ("Aperçu historique") and an introduction with general ornithological observations. The main part treats the passerines, first group: the seed-eaters. It begins with the siskin (Fringilla spinus) and ends with the ortolan. Two species of parrot are added. An alphabetical index closes the volume. The work is addressed to enthusiasts of aviary keeping. The 50 framed plates show some 84 species, mostly two per sheet, each with the species name in print. Every plate carries the notations "Ier volume", plate number, running title and the publisher's address "A. Bellier et Cie, Imprimeurs-Éditeurs, Bordeaux", with "chromo lith" within the image field. Particularly impressive is the colourful, pictorially designed original wrapper. - A good copy.
