Zoologie - Herpetologie
I Mammifères 1869, Bd. II/III Reptiles et Batraciens 1872, Bd. IV Poissons 1882/1890, Bd. V/VI Oiseaux 1899/1904). - Minimal fleckig. Noch gutes Exemplar.
Natural Sciences – Zoology. - Herpetology. - With 5 (2 colored) lithographs and one table. - Third volume of the monumental five- or six-volume Faune des Vertébrés de la Suisse by the Geneva zoologist Victor Fatio de Beaumont (1838-1906), whose compilation spanned over 40 years (vol. I Mammifères 1869, vol. II/III Reptiles et Batraciens 1872, vol. IV Poissons 1882/1890, vol. V/VI Oiseaux 1899/1904). Fatio, son of the Geneva ornithologist Gustave Fatio, studied zoology in Zurich under Oswald Heer, in Berlin and Leipzig, and in Paris under Claude Bernard and Henri Milne-Edwards, and is regarded as one of the most important Swiss vertebrate researchers of the nineteenth century. The present volume offers, for the first time, a comprehensive natural history of the reptiles and amphibians of Switzerland: systematics, distribution, habits, and habitats of the native lizards, snakes, and tortoises as well as frogs, toads, and newts, supplemented by numerous locality records also from border regions of France. The work remained the standard reference on the Swiss herpetofauna for decades and continues to be cited in herpetological literature today, including in early studies on the batrachology of the canton of Neuchâtel and in modern red lists and bibliographies of Swiss amphibians and reptiles. - A few leaves with marginal damage at the outer edge. - Bound with the supplement. - Minor foxing. Still a good copy.
