Naturwissenschaften – VD16 W 3607. - Seltene Frankfurter Ausgabe eines der einflussreichsten deutschsprachigen medizinischen Handbücher der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts. Das Werk geht auf den Heidelberger Arzt, Apotheker und Ratsherrn Christoph Wirsung zurück und erschien erstmals 1568. Seine breite Wirkung verdankte es nicht zuletzt der Verbindung gelehrter Heilkunde mit einer klaren, volkssprachlichen Darstellungsform und praktisch nutzbaren therapeutischen Anweisungen. Die hier vorliegende Ausgabe von 1577 wurde von dem Heidelberger Arzt und Botaniker Jacobus Theodorus Tabernaemontanus sorgfältig durchgesehen, in eine systematische Ordnung gebracht und um zwei Register ergänzt. Der Titel hebt diese editorische Leistung ausdrücklich hervor: Tabernaemontanus habe den Text "fleissig vbersehen", mit Registern versehen und "auff ein newes" in Druck gegeben. Inhalt Wirsungs enzyklopädisches Arzneibuch behandelt Krankheiten und Beschwerden sämtlicher äußerer und innerer Körperteile "von dem Haupt an biß zu den Füssen" und folgt damit der in der vormodernen Medizin traditionellen Anordnung a capite ad calcem - vom Kopf bis zur Fußsohle. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Diagnose, Ursachenlehre und Heilverfahren, insbesondere Arzneien, Diätetik und konkrete Rezepturen. Das Buch richtet sich nicht ausschließlich an akademisch ausgebildete Ärzte. Seine deutsche Sprache und die anwendungsorientierte Anlage machten es auch für Wundärzte, Apotheker, Hebammen sowie gebildete Laien zugänglich. Die spätere englische Übersetzung bezeichnete das Werk ausdrücklich als nützlich für "phisitions, chirurgions, apothecaries, and midwiues" ebenso wie für weitere Stände. - Textabriss der letzten beiden Seiten, Falz angeplatzt, Selten.

Natural Sciences – Medicine. - Wirsung, physician, apothecary, and councillor in Heidelberg, and was first published in 1568. Its wide impact was due in no small part to its combination of learned medical knowledge with a clear vernacular mode of presentation and practically applicable therapeutic instructions. The present 1577 edition was carefully revised by the Heidelberg physician and botanist Jacobus Theodorus Tabernaemontanus, arranged systematically, and supplemented with two indexes. The title page expressly emphasizes this editorial achievement, stating that Tabernaemontanus had "fleissig vbersehen" carefully reviewed the text, provided it with indexes, and issued it anew in print, "auff ein newes." Contents Wirsung's encyclopaedic medical manual discusses diseases and ailments affecting every external and internal part of the human body, "von dem Haupt an biß zu den Füssen" ("from the head down to the feet"). It thus follows the traditional a capite ad calcem arrangement of pre-modern medicine-from head to foot. Its principal concerns are diagnosis, the theory of causes, and methods of treatment, especially remedies, dietetics, and specific prescriptions. The book was not addressed solely to university-trained physicians. Its German language and practical orientation made it accessible to barber-surgeons, apothecaries, midwives, and educated lay readers as well. The later English translation explicitly described the work as useful for "phisitions, chirurgions, apothecaries, and midwiues," as well as for other social groups.
