An experimental inquiry into the nature, and propagation, of heat. Mit 9 (5 gefalt.) Kupfertafeln. London, Mawman, 1804. XV, 562 S. HLdr. d. Zt. mit RSchd. (beschabt, Gelenke eingerissen, Kapitale mit Fehlstellen).

Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe. - Teils etwas braun- bzw. stockfleckig.
Natural Sciences – First edition. - Leslie's magnum opus established several fundamental laws of thermal radiation: that the emissivity and absorptivity of any surface are equal, that the emissivity of a surface increases with increasing reflectivity, and that the intensity of heat radiated by a surface is proportional to the sine of the angle of the rays to the surface. The book also played an important role in the early 19th-century debate over whether heat was a form of matter or a mode of motion. Leslie's experiments showed that, unlike light, heat was not transmitted directly through transparent solids. In Chapter 19, Leslie describes some of the instruments-in particular, a photometer-that he used in his experiments. Half leather with spine label (worn, joints torn, capital letters with missing parts). - Some pages are slightly browned or have stains.
