Lot 1484 Magnolia und Veronica …

Magnolia und Veronica spicata. 2 Originalzeichnungen.

Natural Sciences – Botany. - Botanica Specifica - Magnolia and a Veronica spicata. 2 original drawings. Watercolour, partly heightened with gouache, over fine pencil underdrawing, on paper. Each approx. 35 × 25 cm (sheet size). The colours are fresh. The paper has slight age-related toning and occasional faint stains (on the second sheet at upper left and in the centre). The second drawing is inscribed and dated in ink at lower right "Schloßberg bei Teplitz. d. 10ten Juli 1862." (The Schloßberg near Teplitz (Czech: Doubravská hora, or Doubravka for short, historically also Daubersberg) is a prominent hill, 382 metres high, on the eastern edge of the North Bohemian spa town of Teplice (Teplitz) in the Czech Republic.) Included are: Magnolia. The drawing shows a flowering branch with one fully open blossom and a larger, half-closed blossom, along with two buds, one of them with the typical downy brown bud sheath. The petals shade from deep purple-carmine at the base to a delicate white-pink at the tips. This gradation is rendered very naturalistically through fine glazes and stippling. The gnarled branch, with leaf scars and bud scales, is modelled in detail in tones of brown and grey. The species corresponds to the appearance of the saucer magnolia (Magnolia × soulangeana). Spiked speedwell (Veronica spicata). The whole plant is depicted, from the root system to the flower spike. The inflorescences are shown at different stages of development: the upper spike is in bloom in a strong violet-blue, while the lateral spikes are still in bud and silvery-grey. The narrow, grey-green leaves are delicately rendered in glazing technique. The plant is composed diagonally across the sheet, as is typical of scientific botanical studies. At lower right is a handwritten inscription in ink giving place and date.
