Lot 1411 Hartmanova,. Jüdischer Friedhof in Brandýs …

Jüdischer Friedhof in Brandýs nad Labem (Tschechien). - 7 Vintages. Silbergelatine (12,3 x 17,5 cm). Quer.-8°- Album.

Judaica

Photography – Jewish Cemetery in Brandýs nad Labem (Czech Republic). - 7 vintage prints. Silver gelatin prints (12.3 × 17.5 cm). Oblong octavo album. The Jewish cemetery of Brandýs nad Labem is a striking testament to the former Jewish community of this Central Bohemian town, which today forms the twin town of Brandýs nad Labem-Stará Boleslav together with Stará Boleslav. This historic burial ground preserves tombstones with Hebrew inscriptions and traditional symbols of Jewish funerary culture. Some of the stones stand closely together, surrounded by vegetation and partly weathered, they convey the character both of a site of remembrance and of a historical archive. According to the handwritten inscription in the album, the photographs were taken on 2 October 1957. They document the cemetery at a time when many Jewish burial grounds in Czechoslovakia received little maintenance in the aftermath of the destruction of Jewish communities during the Shoah and amid the conditions of the post-war period. The photographs therefore possess not only photographic value but also significance as sources for local and cultural history: they record the design of individual tombstones, their Hebrew inscriptions, and the condition of the cemetery at that time.
