Der umfangreiche Band verbindet eine kunsthistorische Würdigung von Manets Entwicklung und Stellung innerhalb der modernen französischen Malerei mit einem systematischen Katalog seiner Gemälde und Pastelle. Das Werk wurde zum frühen Referenzpunkt für die Manet-Forschung. Mit den Original-Radierungen Le Gamin au chien (Der Junge mit dem Hund), Radierung nach dem Gemälde Le gamin au chien von 1861, in der Platte signiert. Für diese Ausgabe abgezogen im zweiten, endgültigen Zustand (II/II). Werkverzeichnis: Guérin 27, Harris 31 (auch als McKean Fisher 5 bzw. Wilson 15 geführt) und L'Olympia, Radierung nach dem berühmten Gemälde von 1863/65. (Minimally rubbed.) - First edition of this fundamental early monograph on Édouard Manet, written by the art critic, collector, and committed champion of Impressionism Théodore Duret (1838-1927/29). This substantial volume combines an art-historical assessment of Manet's development and his position within modern French painting with a systematic catalogue of his paintings and pastels. It became an early standard reference for Manet scholarship. With the original etchings Le Gamin au chien (The Boy with a Dog), after Manet's 1861 painting Le gamin au chien, signed in the plate and printed for this edition in the second and final state (II/II), catalogue raisonné: Guérin 27, Harris 31 (also McKean Fisher 5 and Wilson 15), and L'Olympia, after the celebrated painting of 1863/65, printed for the 1902 Duret edition in the sixth state according to Guérin (VI/VI), or the fifth state according to Harris (V/V), catalogue raisonné: Guérin 39, Harris 53. A good copy.
