Jugendstil - Judaica
Modern Literature and Art – A magnificent first edition and impressive magnum opus by Ephraim Mose Lilien (1874-1925), the prominent Art Nouveau illustrator, graphic artist, and bookplate artist. This lavishly illustrated volume brings together Lilien's unmistakable visual world through numerous illustrations: ornamentally dense book art, expressive drawings, symbolist figurative compositions, and Jewish themes of great poetic power. With his fusion of Art Nouveau aesthetics and Zionist-Jewish visual language, Lilien shaped a new, self-assured visual modernism. Of particular significance is the extensive introduction by the young Stefan Zweig, with whom Lilien had been friends since 1902. In it, Zweig pays tribute to Lilien's artistic journey, his early works for magazines such as *Die Jugend* and *Simplicissimus*, his work as an illustrator, and his involvement in the Zionist movement within Theodor Herzl's circle. The text is regarded as an important testament to the Jewish cultural renaissance around 1900.
