Rosenthal, XLIX, 1005. - Renouard, ICP, II, 2268 Nur 2 Exemplare in Bibliotheken (USB Köln, GBIV3026., BnF, Paris BP16103929). September 1520. Eine Seite mit Defekt, teils knapp beschnitten.
Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Post-Incunabula. - Printed in two columns in Gothic type (textura), throughout in two colors, red and black (rubrics in red, lesson and antiphon text in black), with red column and border rules, initials as woodcut cadel letters. Lacking the title-leaf and 8 leaves. Contemporary calf over 4 raised bands with blind-tooled fillets and metal clasps (somewhat rubbed and scuffed). Of the utmost rarity: only 2 copies traceable at auction in the last 80 years, no copy traceable in the international trade. USB Cologne, GBIV3026. - The volume contains the complete office of the Cologne diocesan breviary rite in the classic two-part arrangement: Pars Hyemalis (Advent to Easter) and Pars Aestivalis (Easter to Advent), each with psalter, calendar, Proprium de tempore, Commune sanctorum, and an appendix of rubrics for movable feast dates (Easter, the Easter octave, etc., identifiable by the rubrics "Si venerit in diem aut intra hebdomadam paschalem."). Each part concludes with its own register of quire signatures and its own colophon. The entire volume was printed by the Parisian liturgical printer Desiderius (Didier) Maheu, established in the Rue Saint-Jacques "sub signo sancti Nicolai," who between the early sixteenth century and the 1540s printed numerous missals and breviaries for various dioceses, including, together with Jean Kerbriant, for Nevers, Autun, and Senlis. The edition was published at the commission and expense ("impensis") of the Cologne booksellers' partnership of Ludwig Hornken and Gottfried Hittorp, who from 1511 ran a joint publishing business in Paris for the Cologne market and had liturgical works printed at reputable Parisian presses. Both parts - the winter and summer sections - were completed in the same year, 1520, the winter part bearing the exact date of 16 September 1520. One leaf with a defect, in places closely trimmed.
