Aesop
Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Umfangreiche Sammlung der Illustrationen zu Aesops Fabeln. - Brunet V, 1131. - Vgl. Fabula docet). - Die Holzschnitte teils leicht fleckig bzw. etwas gebräunt.
Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – An extensive collection of illustrations to Aesop's fables. Brunet V, 1131. Cf. Fabula docet 60. Giovanni Mario Verdizotti (1525-1600) was a pupil and confidant of Titian. For his edition he took as his model Gabriello Faerno's Latin verse fables published in 1563, of which about two-thirds were incorporated into his collection. In his full-page woodcuts, Verdizotti often let the actual fable action recede behind an elaborate depiction of landscape, giving the illustrations a distinctly "painterly" character. Whether Titian had a hand in the making of the illustrations, for instance in the form of preparatory drawings, cannot be established with certainty (cf. Fabula docet). The woodcuts partly slightly stained or somewhat browned.
