Belgische Moderne

Online - Modern and Contemporary Art – Untitled. Color lithograph on Japanese paper. Signed and numbered. Minimal brown spots. A magnificent, vibrant print that nearly fills the page. One of 100 copies. Stylistically, Van Velde was closely associated with Tachism and Lyrical Abstraction-the European counterpart to American Abstract Expressionism. His compositions are characterized by recognizable, partly geometric forms that are set in tension with one another through transparent layers of color, always seeking a balance between the color fields. The monumental arch-shaped form in ochre, dark brown, and gray-green exemplifies van Velde's lyrical-abstract style of the 1960s and 1970s, in which gestural brushstrokes and transparent layers of paint reveal existential tensions-protection and threat, interior and exterior. As a close friend of Samuel Beckett and a participant in documenta 1964, van Velde is one of the most significant representatives of European Informel, whose works are now on view in international museums such as the Tate Gallery in London.
