Amerikanische Moderne

Splendid, colour-intense, contrast-rich and experimental-like impression with wide margin. - One of 85 copies. - Sam Middleton is an African American artist from Harlem whose work shows influences of Abstract Expressionism. His use of color, brushwork, and composition reflect the spontaneous, controlled randomness characteristic of this celebrated American postwar movement. Another source of inspiration for Middleton is music, both jazz and classical. Even as a child, he frequently visits the nearby Savoy Ballroom. Music goes hand in hand with his artistic practice, the dynamic, harmonious composition of this piece makes the colors resonate. In the U.S., Middleton struggles to achieve his artistic breakthrough and subsequently travels to Mexico, Spain, Sweden, France, and Denmark before settling in the Netherlands in 1961. His work is part of the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum in New York, which featured him in the 1962 exhibition "40 Artists under 40."
