Die Farbpaare - "Blue/Green", "Red-Orange/Yellow/Blue", "Black/White/Black" oder "Orange/Green" - erzeugen starke Kontraste, ohne durch Binnenzeichnung oder Modulation "belebt" zu werden. Kelly erzeugt hier Spannung allein aus der Beziehung der Farbfelder zueinander. Die Motive der "Ten Lithographs", auf die das "Sample Portfolio" verweist, gehen auf Gemälde und Skulpturen zurück, die Kelly zwischen 1967 und 1970 geschaffen hatte, die Drucke sind somit nicht bloße Reproduktionen, sondern eine mediale "Übersetzung" seiner bis dahin entwickelten Bildideen. Im Rückblick zeigt das Portfolio, wie konsequent Kelly seine Grundgedanken - Reduktion, reine Farbe, einfache Form - auch im Medium der Druckgraphik verfolgt und in Serien denkt, in denen kleinste Verschiebungen von Farbe und Proportion zu neuen visuellen Erlebnissen führen. Damit steht das Sample Portfolio exemplarisch für Kellys Verständnis von Druckgraphik nicht als Reproduktion, sondern als gleichwertiger Ort der künstlerischen Erfindung innerhalb seines Gesamtwerks.

In retrospect, the portfolio demonstrates how consistently Kelly pursued his fundamental ideas-reduction, pure color, simple form-even in the medium of printmaking, conceiving them as series in which the slightest shifts in color and proportion lead to new visual experiences. The sample portfolio thus exemplifies Kelly's view of printmaking not as mere reproduction, but as an equally valid avenue for artistic invention within his body of work.
