Lot 359 Robert Barry. Untitled (Dark Red, Cross). …

Untitled (Dark Red, Cross). 1994. Acryl und Tinte auf Leinwand. 61 x 61 cm.

Konzeptkunst – Holly Solomon Gallery, New York/Privatsammlung, Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Conceptual Art – Acrylic and ink on canvas. Monogrammed and dated in the corners on the reverse, and bearing typographically printed labels with details of the work and information on its provenance. - Overall in very good and immaculate condition. - Holly Solomon Gallery, New York/Private collection, Düsseldorf. - Robert Barry is one of the pioneers of Conceptual Art and, alongside Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth and Douglas Huebler, ranks among the defining figures of a movement that systematically detached the artwork from the physical object. Alongside his work with invisible media such as inert gases, radio waves and language, since the 1980s he has been creating monochromatic, square canvases on which, as in the present work, words are applied in a strictly logical arrangement in ink of almost identical colour: REGRET, OPPOSITE, LIFE, AVOIDING, INEVITABLE, ROUTINE, INTEND. Only when the viewer moves around the work is the text revealed, questions of invisibility and of time and space as conditions of perception remain ever-present, oscillating between reflection and commentary. The square format and the cross-scheme in the work's title simultaneously refer to Barry's engagement with geometric structure as a conceptual framework.
