Edition Schellmann, München/New York. - Die dicht gedrängten ovalen Formen der vorliegenden Arbeit mit ihren eingeschriebenen Zeichen, die Assoziationen von Köpfen, Steinen und unlesbarer Schrift wecken, spiegeln die archaische und mediterrane Bildwelt, aus der sich Kounellis' gesamtes Werk speist. Das tiefe, mit gestischer Intensität aufgetragene Schwarz der Lithographie verleiht den Formen eine materielle Präsenz, die über das Blatt hinauszudrängen scheint. Die Irritation der Wahrnehmung ist dabei programmatisch: Kounellis interessierte sich für den Moment, in dem vertraute Kategorien von Figur und Abstraktion, Bild und Objekt, Schrift und Zeichen ins Gleiten geraten und der Betrachter in einen Zustand produktiver Ungewissheit versetzt wird.

An excellent, distinctly chalky print with deep blacks and a narrow margin, with the rim at the bottom. - One of 99 copies. - Published by Edition Schellmann, Munich/New York. - The densely packed oval forms in this work, with their inscribed symbols that evoke associations with heads, stones and illegible writing, reflect the archaic and Mediterranean imagery that informs Kounellis's entire oeuvre. The deep black of the lithograph, applied with gestural intensity, lends the forms a material presence that seems to push beyond the sheet. The disorientation of perception is programmatic here: Kounellis was interested in the moment when familiar categories of figure and abstraction, image and object, writing and sign begin to shift, placing the viewer in a state of productive uncertainty.
