Zao Wou-Kis acht Farbblätter zu den Illuminations sind keine Illustrationen einzelner Gedichte, sondern visuelle Verdichtungen des gesamten poetischen Kosmos. Farbflächen, Linien, lasierende Überlagerungen und in den Druck übertragene Spuren der Aquarelltechnik erzeugen einen Zwischenraum von Licht, Nebel und Explosion, der an Rimbauds Visionen von "Illuminationen" - Aufleuchtmomenten der Wahrnehmung - erinnert, ohne sie motivisch festzulegen. Kennzeichnend ist Zao Wou-Kis hybride Bildsyntax: Er ist von chinesischer Kalligrafie und Landschaftsmalerei ebenso geprägt wie von der europäischen Nachkriegsabstraktion (Tachismus, Informel, abstrakter Expressionismus). In den Illuminations kondensiert sich dies zu schwebenden, meist zentrierenden Formbündeln, die wie ferne Städte, eruptive Naturereignisse oder kosmische Konstellationen aufscheinen, um sich im nächsten Moment wieder als rein malerische, nicht-gegenständliche Gebilde zu entziehen. Feine, kalligrafische Linienzüge - oft wie ein Schriftfluss, manchmal wie seismische Kurven - durchziehen wolkige Farbbahnen, sodass der Eindruck entsteht, als sei die Sprache Rimbauds selbst in eine abstrakte, visuelle Kalligraphie übersetzt worden. Die Farbpalette schwingt zwischen nächtlichen Blautönen, erdigen Umbras, Glut-Rots und gedämpften Gelb- und Ockertönen. Diese Farben stehen im unaufdringlichen, aber deutlichen Dialog mit Motiven der Gedichte: Stadtlicht und Hafenfeuer, Dämmerungen, "Illuminationen" eines inneren wie äußeren Horizonts, aber auch die dunklen Zonen von Exil und Zerrissenheit, die Rimbauds Text durchziehen. Durch das Medium Aquatinta gelingt es Zao Wou-Ki, die Transparenz seiner Aquarelle in die Tiefe des Tiefdrucks zu transponieren: Nebelige Übergänge, weiche, fast rauchige Partien und dazwischen scharf eingegrabene Linien erzeugen eine Spannung von Diffusion und Prägnanz, die der poetischen Sprengkraft von Rimbauds Fragmenten entspricht.

Informel – Signed in the colophon. - Magnificent prints, executed in vibrant color palettes and finely graded aquatint, in which Zao Wou-Ki's abstract fields of form appear as vibrant, atmospheric zones of light on heavy vellum paper. - Magnificent prints, Zao Wou-Ki's eight colour plates for the Illuminations are not illustrations of individual poems but visual condensations of the work's entire poetic cosmos. Colour fields, lines, translucent overlays and traces of watercolour technique translated into print generate an intermediate realm of light, mist and explosion that recalls Rimbaud's visions of "illuminations" - sudden flare-ups of perception - without fixing them to specific motifs. Characteristic is Zao Wou-Ki's hybrid image syntax: he is shaped as much by Chinese calligraphy and landscape painting as by European post-war abstraction (tachism, art informel, abstract expressionism). In the Illuminations this condenses into hovering, mostly centring clusters of form that appear like distant cities, eruptive natural events or cosmic constellations, only to withdraw in the next instant back into purely painterly, non-figurative configurations. Fine, calligraphic lines - often like a flow of script, sometimes like seismic curves - traverse cloudy bands of colour so that one has the impression that Rimbaud's language itself has been translated into an abstract visual calligraphy. The colour palette oscillates between nocturnal blues, earthy umbers, glowing reds and muted yellows and ochres. These colours enter into an unobtrusive yet distinct dialogue with motifs from the poems: city lights and harbour fires, twilights, "illuminations" of an inner and outer horizon, but also the dark zones of exile and inner division that run through Rimbaud's text. Through the medium of aquatint, Zao Wou-Ki succeeds in transposing the transparency of his watercolours into the depth of intaglio printing: misty transitions, soft, almost smoky passages and, in between, sharply incised lines create a tension between diffusion and precision that corresponds to the explosive poetic force of Rimbaud's fragments.
