Edition Schellmann, München/New York. - Mit Chiaroscuro ("Hell-Dunkel") stellt Giulio Paolini zwei Versionen desselben Bildes einander gegenüber: einen schwarzen Fleck auf weißem Grund nach Picabias La Sainte-Vierge von 1920 und einen weißen Fleck auf schwarzem Grund nach einer Photographie eines Feuerwerks. Die Umkehrung ist nicht nur formal, sondern programmatisch: Paolini zufolge dreht sich jede seiner Arbeiten um eine dem Bild implizite Blende, einen Spiegel, der die Erscheinung zugleich ausstellt und entzieht. Das Diptychon-Format macht dieses Prinzip der Spiegelung und Umkehrung zur sichtbaren Struktur des Werks selbst.

The reversal is not merely formal, but programmatic: according to Paolini, each of his works revolves around a blind spot implicit in the image - a mirror that simultaneously reveals and conceals the apparition. The diptych format makes this principle of reflection and reversal the visible structure of the work itself.
