Naturwissenschaften – Im Handel seltene Ausgabe des Barock von Valescos Hauptwerk, für uns auf Auktionen nur ein Mal nachweisbar (2003). - VD17 23:626801D. - Hirsch/Hübötter I, 302. - Mit einem vorzüglich radierten Porträt des deutschen Mediziners und Alechmisten Georg Wolfgang Wedel (1645-1721), welcher ein Vorwort beisteuerte, ausgestattete Ausgabe des magnum opus des portugiesischen Arztes Valescus de Taranta (auch Balescon de Tarente), zuerst als Hs. im Jahr 1418 nachweisbar, im Druck zuerst erschienen unter dem Titel "Practica dicta Philonium" im Jahr 1490 bei Trechsel in Lyon (Wellcome 587 bzw. Osler 7501, der die gleichenjahrs von Huss dortselbst gedruckte Ausgabe als Erstdruck nennt.) - Valescus "gehörte zu den Lichtern der älteren Schule von Montpellier, wohin er aus seinem Geburtsland Portugal etwa um 1380 gekommen zu sein scheint ... Das Philonium errang sich jedoch schon bei Lebzeiten genügenden Erfolg, um seinen Verfasser den Titel eines ersten Arztes Karls VI. von Frankreich einzutragen." (Hirsch/Hübötter I, 302). - Provenienz: 1. Stift Lambach, Oberösterreich, mit altem Stempel d. Zt. auf dem Titelbl. 2. Joan. Bapt. WErloschnig de Pernberg, mit dessen hs., mit 1712 datierten Besitzereintrag auf dem Titelbl. - Im Fußsteg durchgehend wasserfleckig, teils braunfleckig und mit kleinen Stockfleckchen, insgesamt gut erhaltenes Exemplar.

Natural Sciences – Medicine. - Valesco's main work in a rare edition from the Baroque period, which we have only been able to trace once at auction (2003). Bound in contemporary half vellum with Spanish flaps, handwritten and embossed title on paper label as well as green headbands (somewhat stained and rubbed). - For references see above. - With an exquisite etched portrait of the German physician and alchemist Georg Wolfgang Wedel (1645-1721) as frontispiece, who contributed a preface, this edition of the magnum opus by the Portuguese physician Valescus de Taranta (also Balescon de Tarente) was first documented as a manuscript in 1418 and first appeared in print under the title 'Practica dicta Philonium' in 1490 by Trechsel in Lyon (Wellcome 587 and Osler 7501, who cites the edition printed by Huss in Lyon in the same year as the first edition). - Valescus 'was one of the luminaries of the older school of Montpellier, where he seems to have arrived from his native Portugal around 1380 ... However, the Philonium achieved sufficient success during his lifetime to earn its author the title of chief physician to Charles VI of France.' (Hirsch/Hübötter I, 302). - Provenance: 1. Lambach Abbey, Upper Austria, with old stamp on the title page. 2. Joan. Bapt. Werloschnig de Pernberg, with his handwritten entry dated 1712 on the title page. - Water stains throughout the lower margins, some brown stains and small foxing spots, overall well-preserved copy.
