Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe des für die Geschichte der Neurologie bedeutenden Mappenwerks mit spektakulären Heliogravüren, hier auch mit prominenter Proveninez. - Nicht in Heidtmann, Hook-Norman Fingers, Origins of Neuroscience. - Die ersten Studien der zerebralen weißen Substanz menschlicher Gehirne wurden von Galen und später von Vesalius beschrieben. Über Jahrhunderte hinweg entwickelten Anatomen verschiedene Techniken zur Präparation und Dissektion von präparierten Gehirnen, um die komplexe Architektur der weißen Substanz besser sichtbar zu machen. Eine Pionierleistung in dieser Disziplin erbrachte jedoch der Mitautor vorliegenden Werks, Joseph Klingler. "In den 1930er Jahren gewannen die Faserbahnen der weißen Substanz, insbesondere nach Cajals Arbeiten, zunehmend an Bedeutung für die Neurochirurgie. In vielen Übersichten zur Neurobiologie der weißen Substanz wurden die bahnbrechenden Beiträge von Josef Klingler (1888-1963) und ihre neurologischen Anwendungen vernachlässigt. 1934 entwickelte Klingler an der Universität Basel unter Eugen Ludwig eine neue Dissektionsmethode, die auf einer Gefriertechnik für Hirngewebe basierte und die Faserbahnen der weißen Substanz eindrucksvoll sichtbar machte. Klingler arbeitete mit Anatomen, Chirurgen und anderen Wissenschaftlern zusammen, und seine Modelle und Dissektionen der Faserbahnen der weißen Substanz gelten bis heute als die elegantesten, die je geschaffen wurden." Auf dem vorderen Innendeckel aufgeklebt dessen illustriertem Exlibris und ein Blatt weißen Papiers mit handschriftlicher Widmung der beiden Autoren an ihn, datiert "Basel, den 5. April 1939". Der Widmungsträger war 1935 aufgrund seiner jüdischen Abstammung in die Schweiz emigriert. - Die Bl. durchgehend gering gebräunt, Vortitelblatt minimal fingerfleckig, sonst sehr schönes Exemplar des seltenen Mappenwerks.

Natural Sciences – Medicine. - First edition of the portfolio with 50 spectacular photgravures, significant for the history of neurology, our copy also with prominent provenance. - For references see above. - The first studies of the cerebral white matter of human brains were described by Galen and later by Vesalius. Over centuries, anatomists developed various techniques for the preparation and dissection of brains in order to better visualize the complex architecture of the white matter. However, a pioneering achievement in this discipline was made by the co-author of this work, Joseph Klingler. "In the 1930s, the fiber tracts of the white matter, particularly following Cajal's work, gained increasing importance for neurosurgery. Many reviews of white matter neurobiology neglected the groundbreaking contributions of Josef Klingler (1888-1963) and their neurological applications. In 1934, at the University of Basel under Eugen Ludwig, Klingler developed a new dissection method based on a freezing technique for brain tissue, which impressively visualized the fiber tracts of the white matter. Klingler collaborated with anatomists, surgeons, and other scientists, and his models and dissections of the white matter fiber tracts are still considered among the most elegant ever created." In: Neurosurgery Vol. 69 (2011), pp. 238-254). - Provenance: Gerhard Wolf-Heidegger (1910-1986), at the time of publication of the present portfolio, a qualified lecturer at the Anatomical Institute of Basel, and from 1955 the successor to Eugen Ludwig as Chair of Anatomy there. His illustrated bookplate and a sheet of white paper with a handwritten dedication to him by the two authors, dated "Basel, April 5, 1939," are tipped-on to the front inside cover. The dedicatee had emigrated to Switzerland in 1935 due to his Jewish heritage. - Slightly browned throughout, the front title page has minimal finger marks, otherwise a very fine copy of this rare portfolio.
