Mathematik
Naturwissenschaften – Hoogendoorn CEU05L (1.2), de Wreede (mixture between B 1 and B 3). - not in Tomash (but see C57). - Bierens de Haan 839. - Poggendorff I, col. 414. - Simoni C-85. - DSB III, 181 (Ceulen). - DSB XII, 499-502 (Snellius). - Macclesfield sale 509.
Natural Sciences – Mathematics. - Title with woodcut diagram, numerous text woodcuts and diagrams, as well as woodcut book ornaments. Contemp. calf (somewhat rubbed and scuffed, spine label chipped). Very rare first edition (one of 4 variants) of the Latin "translation" of Ludolf van Ceulen's famous De arithmetische en geometrische fondamenten, including his calculation of p to 33 places. Having published 20 places of p in 1596, the more accurate results appeared posthumously in Dutch. Snellius' translation is an independent work: he not only translated but edited, omitted basic chapters (elementary arithmetic), and commented extensively on his predecessor's work, creating a Latin version as a dialogue between the two mathematicians. Van Ceulen pursued a practical approach, Snellius a humanistic one. Lacking second leaf of preliminaries (sometimes present in this issue: Latin dedicatory text by Ceulen's widow Adriana Simonis), browned, some leaves waterstained (pp. 3-14). Pp. 148 and 240 images shaved at lower margins, p. 187 paper flaw (one letter missing). Rare Latin edition of Ludolf van Ceulen's work combining arithmetic and geometry with practical problem-solving.
