Mathematik
Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe des Hauptwerks des schottischen Mathematikers MacLaurin (1698-1746), einen frühen Verteidiger der Newtonschen Methoden. - DSB VIII, 609-11, insb. 610. - Norman 1408 (noteworthy"). - Poggendorff II, 5f. - "The earliest logical and systematic publication of the Newtonian methods.
Natural Sciences – Mathematics. - First edition of the magnum opus by Scottish mathematician MacLaurin (1698-1746), an early proponent of Newtonian methods, a work richly illustrated with 41 folding copper engraved plates (numbered I-XL, XXV double). - For references see above. - 'The earliest logical and systematic publication of Newtonian methods. It stood as a model of rigour until the appearance of Cauchy's Cours d'Analyse in 1821.' (DSB) Formulated in response to Berkeley's criticism of the foundations of the analysis, this influential work contains the proof of what later became known as the 'MacLaurin series', a special case of the Taylor series, to which MacLaurin also refers. In addition, with this work, the author laid the foundations for the development of the 'Euler-Maclaurin formula'. - Endpapers stronger and title page slightly discoloured by former glueing, title pages verso with minor adhesive residue from removed bookplates. Otherwise a very well-preserved copy indeed, wide margins, hardly any stains, only slightly and evenly browned.
