Izarn, ein Arzt und Physiker, rekonstruiert zunächst die verschiedenen Deutungen dieser Phänomene vor 1700 und ergänzt sie um zahlreiche, teils erstmals publizierte Beobachtungsberichte zu spektakulären Meteoritenfällen, unter anderem Beiträge von Pictet, Sage, Darcet und Vauquelin. Auf dieser empirischen Grundlage entwirft er eine Theorie der Entstehung dieser Steine, die sie - noch im Rahmen der damaligen Physik - als in den oberen Schichten der Erdatmosphäre gebildete Körper versteht und damit zwischen traditioneller "Blitzstein"-Erklärung und einer extraterrestrischen Deutung steht. Die beigegebene gefaltete Tabelle dient der übersichtlichen Präsentation und Vergleichung der dokumentierten Fälle, etwa nach Datum, Ort, Erscheinungsform und physikalischen Eigenschaften der Steine, und macht das Buch zugleich zu einem Arbeitsinstrument für Naturforscher, die das umstrittene Phänomen quantitativ fassen wollten. - Nur minimal fleckig. Izarn, a physician and physicist, first reconstructs the various interpretations of these phenomena prior to 1700 and supplements them with numerous observational reports-some published here for the first time-on spectacular meteorite falls, including contributions by Pictet, Sage, Darcet, and Vauquelin. On this empirical basis, he develops a theory of the origin of these stones, which-still within the framework of the physics of the time-understands them as bodies formed in the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere, thus standing between the traditional "lightning stone" explanation and an extraterrestrial interpretation.
