Zauberbuch (flip-book). Folge von 28 blattgroßen kolorierten Kupferstichen mit Legenden auf Französisch, davon 12 kopfüber eingebunden. O. O. u. Dr. (Frankreich), um 1780. 16 nn. S., wovon 12 bedruckt. Kl.-8°. 8 Doppelblätter je mit Einkerbungen im Außensteg, lose im Umschlag d. Zt. aus farbigem Schneckenmarmorpapier (in den Falzen für eine frühere Fadenheftung je 3 Mal perforiert, gering berieben).

Kunstwissenschaften – Sehr seltenes, buntes "Zauberbuch". - Illusionistisches Druckwerk, das durch schnelles Umblättern mit dem Daumen zum Leben erweckt werden konnten und somit als Vorläufer des "Daumenkinos" gelten kann. Zur leichteren Handhabung des illusionistischen Effekts wurde die Fadenheftung entfernt. - Dargestellt und in kräftigen Farben koloriert sind u.a. Musiker (z.B. Le Tambourin), Kavalleristen, Tiere (Dromedar, Elefant, Vögel), topographische Motive (z. B. Le Moulin de Javelle), allegorische Figuren (La Marchande d'Amour, La Marchande de Plaisir), literarische Figuren (Hr. Purgon aus Molières "Der eingebildete Kranke") und zu Beginn eine Szenerie mit einer Laterna Magica, die den illusionistischen Charakter des Büchleins unterstreicht. - Die Innenseite des Buntpapierumschlags wasserfleckig, stellenweise gering fingerfleckig und mitunter mit kleinen Stockfleckchen, insgesamt angesichts der meist häufigen Handhabung dieses Gebrauchsgegenstandes wohlerhalten.

Science of Art – A very rare, colorful French "flip-book", profusely illustrated with 28 full-paged and hand-coloured copper engravings. - An illusionistic booklet that could be brought to life by quickly turning the pages with the thumb and can thus be considered a precursor to the flipbook. The thread binding was removed to facilitate the illusionistic effect. - Depicted and vividly colored are, among other things, musicians (e.g., Le Tambourin), cavalrymen, animals (dromedary, elephant, birds), topographical motifs (e.g., Le Moulin de Javelle), allegorical figures (La Marchande d'Amour, La Marchande de Plaisir), literary figures (Mr. Purgon from Molière's "The Imaginary Invalid"), and a scene with a magic lantern, which underscores the illusionistic nature of the booklet. - The verso of the front wrapper is water-stained, pages in places slightly finger-stained and occasionally with small foxing spots, overall well-preserved considering the frequent handling of this item.
