Moderne Literatur und Kunst – Monod 11339. - Rauch 144. - The Artist and the Book 175. - Das letzte von Maillol illustrierte Buch ist eine Fortfuhrung der bereits 1926 auf der Cranach-Presse erschienenen Eklogen des Vergil. Modern Literature and Art – With 122 original woodcuts and initials by Aristide von Maillol. The last book illustrated by Maillol is a continuation of Virgil's Eclogues, which was published by Cranach-Presse in 1926. The artist had been working on individual blocks since 1909. In 1937, Gonin urged Maillol to continue the work, and in September 1944, the last woodblock was completed. However, printing could not be completed until after the end of the war in 1950. This edition is one of the most important French artist's books of the first half of the 20th century. Maillol worked for years on the woodcuts for Virgil's "Géorgiques," whose rural, natural imagery perfectly matched his classically idealized style. Only a few sheets with minimal brown spots.
