Lot 74 Bertolt Brecht. Eigenhändige Widmung an …

Eigenhändige Widmung an George mit Unterschrift. (Berlin), 1928. In: Hauspostille. Mit Anleitungen, Gesangsnoten und einem Anhange. Mit 1 Tafel nach einer Zeichnung von Caspar Neher. Berlin, Propyläen, 1927. XII, 156 S., 2 Bll. Verlagsanz. 8°. Marmor.

- Erste Ausgabe. - Nubel A 102 - Kosch I, 947 - Buchblock angeplatzt, papierbedingt etw. gebräunt, Vortitel u. Titel leicht stockfleckig, sonst gut.

Autographs – Autograph dedication signed to George. In: As listed above. Orig. marbled hardcover with spine and cover label (rubbed, joints chipped and with missing parts in the cover). 'To Pope George / for use / cordially / Brechtbertolt / b. 28' (transl.). - This probably refers to the poet Stefan George (1868-1933), who was revered almost cultishly by his students and followers in the so-called George Circle as a spiritual leader and aesthetic authority. Many contemporaries, especially from the younger, more political avant-garde, mocked this reverence. Brecht's attitude towards literature was almost the opposite of George's programme. The expression 'Pope George' therefore fits well with the anti-elitist polemic of the left-wing art scene of the late Weimar years. Placing the dedication in his Hauspostille, which parodies religious forms of sermons, chorales and didactic poems, and sending it to the "Pope" as a 'prayer book' underlines Brecht's ironic and polemical gesture. - First edition. - Book block slightly cracking, paper somewhat browned, frontispiece and title slightly foxed, otherwise good.
