Osmanischer Koran. Farblithographische Wiedergabe einer Handschrift mit durchgehender, händischer Goldhöhung. Istanbul, Matbaa-i-Osmaniye, 1889. 612 S. 8° (13,2 x 18,8cm). Originaler Schafledereinband mit Klappe (Mikleb), Decken und Klappe reich mit Flecht- und Rankenwerk, Palmettenfries und -vignetten und geometrischen Formen (u.a. im Mittelstück mit ausstrahlender Sonne) eingefasst bzw. gestaltet, sowie mit umseitigen Goldschnitt (Rücken am Vordergelenk gebrochen, insgesamt eingerissen, beschabt, die Innenseiten etw. fleckig). In einer späteren, händisch bestickten Stofftasche mit Schlaufe.

Koran

Theologie und Religionswissenschaften – Seltene lithographische Kopie einer wertvollen, kunstvoll kalligraphierten und mehrfarbig illuminierten Koranhandschrift. - Kardigali Mustafa Nazif Efendi (gest. 1896) gilt als herausragender Kalligraph seiner Zeit im osmanischen Reich. Der hier vorliegende Mushaf (Kopie eines Koran), eine von Mustafa Nazifs berühmtesten Arbeiten, wurde von diesem vollständig in Naskh-Schrift auf 15 Zeilen pro Seite verfasst, zwischen den Versen mit mehrfarbig und auch in Goldfarbe kolorierten Blüten und an den Rändern mitunter von großen, ebenfalls mehrfarbig kolorierten floralen Motiven verziert. Die Überschriften der Suren sind mit floral verziertem Flechtwerk eingerahmt. Der diesem Druck zugrunde liegende Mushaf entstand während der Regierungszeit von Sultan Abdülhamid II. (ab 1876) und damit in einer Früh- und Übergangsphase der Osmanischen Druckgeschichte, als die traditionell kalligraphierten Korane schon aufwändig lithographisch reproduziert wurden. Erst 1866 hatte Osman Zeki Bey, selbst ursprünglich Kalligraph, in Istanbul die Offizin Matbaa-i-Osmaniye eröffnet, und wurde er damit der erste Druckerverleger, der zum Lithographieren von Koranen autorisiert war. Einige von Mustafa Nazifs exlusiven Handschriften, oft als Geschenke oder für den privaten Gebrauch des Sultans und des Hofstaates in Auftrag gegeben, wurden wie auch vorliegende in diesem Rahmen noch zu seinem Lebzeiten gedruckt. - Vorliegendes Exemplar, gedruckt auf gestrichenem, leicht gelblichem Papier, auf S. 609 mit dem Stempel einer religiösen Zensurbehörde, wohl des Imams einer der großen Istanbuler Moscheen). - Schnitt ets. fleckig, Buchblock stellenweise gelockert, insgesamt gut erhaltener Druck mit einem für diese Handschriften typisch prachtvoll gestaltetem Titelblatt und satter Goldhöhung.

Theology and Religious Studies – Rare lithographed copy of a valuable, artistically calligraphed and multicoloured illuminated Koran manuscript. Bound in a superb contemporary sheepskin binding with rich ornamental gold tooling, additionally in a later, hand-embroidered fabric bag with a loop. - Kardigali Mustafa Nazif Efendi (died 1896) is considered an outstanding calligrapher of his time in the Ottoman Empire. This Mushaf (copy of the Koran), one of Mustafa Nazif's most famous manuscripts, was written entirely in Naskh script on 15 lines per page, decorated between the verses with multicoloured and gold-coloured flowers and occasionally with large, multicoloured floral motifs at the margins. The headings of the suras are framed with floral interlacing. The Mushaf reproduced here was created during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (from 1876) and thus in an early and transitional phase of Ottoman printing history, when traditionally calligraphied Korans were already being reproduced using elaborate lithography. Already in 1866 Osman Zeki Bey, himself originally a calligrapher, had opened the Matbaa-i-Osmaniye printing office in Istanbul, becoming the first printer-publisher authorised to lithograph Qurans. Some of Mustafa Nazif's exclusive manuscripts, often commissioned as gifts or for the private use of the sultan and the royal court, were already printed during his lifetime, as was the case with this one. - This copy, printed on coated, slightly yellowish paper, bears the stamp of a religious censorship authority (probably the imam of one of the large mosques in Istanbul) on p. 609. - Edges soiled, book-block loosened in places, overall well-preserved copy of this print skillfully reproducing also a magnificently designed and illuminated title page typical of these manuscripts.
