Theologie und Religionswissenschaften – Stark erweiterte, opulent illustrierte Ausgabe von Chacóns Geschichte der Päpste und Kardinäle. - Brunet II, 1. - Graesse II, 155. - Hauptwerk des spanischen Kirchenhistorikers und Pioniers der christlichen Archäologie Alfonso Chacón (1530-99). Die Erstausgabe war 1630 posthum in nur 2 Foliobänden erschienen. Besondere Verdienste erwarb sich der Dominikaner durch die archäologische Erschließung der Katakomben und Grüfte Roms, wo er insbesondere eine Reihe an Porträtdarstellungen frühchristlicher Päpste entdeckte, die in vorliegendes Werk einflossen. - Der großformatige, zweispaltige Druck neben den teils radierten, gratigen Kupfertafeln durchgehend mit ebenso kräftigen wie feinzeichnenden Holzschnitten ausgestattet. Das doppelblattgroße Kupfer gibt eine Darstellung der Seeschlacht von Lepanto (1571) wieder, als die unter Papst Pius V. organisierte Christenheit mit Spanien an der Spitze einen überraschenden Sieg über die Osmanen errang. - Provenienz: Joseph Alexander von Hübner (1830-92), österr. Diplomat, mit dessen lithographiertem Ex Libris auf allen vier Vorderspiegeln. - Letztes Bl. von Bd. 1 mit hinterlegter Fehlstelle. Mitunter stärker gebräunt bzw. braunfleckig, einige der Tafeln mit kleinen Randeinrissen, die doppelblattgroße Tafeln vertikal durchgehend hinterlegt mit etwas Bräunung, in den Rändern teils mit kleinen Stockfleckchen. Insgesamt ein gut erhaltener Exemplarsatz des kirchengeschichtlich bedeutenden Werks.

Theology and Religious Studies – Massively expanded, opulently illustrated edition of Chacón's history of the popes and cardinals, most profusely illustrated with 4 large engraved title vignettes (repeated), 57 copperplate engravings, some of which additionally etched, several folding and 1 double-paged, as well as over 1000 wood-cut text illustrations, including 242 portraits of popes, furthermore coats of arms, coins, etc. - For references see above. - Major work by Spanish church historian and pioneer of Christian archaeology Alfonso Chacón (1530-99). The first edition was published posthumously in 1630, and covered only two folio volumes. The Dominican monk earned particular merit through his archaeological exploration of the catacombs and crypts of Rome, where he, among many other findings, discovered a series of portraits of early Christian popes, which were incorporated into this work. The large-format, two-column print is accompanied by partly etched copper engraved plates, as well as wood-cuts that are as bold as they are finely drawn. - The double-page folding copper engraving depicts the naval battle of Lepanto (1571), when Christendom, organised under Pope Pius V and led by Spain, won a surprise victory over the Ottomans. - Provenance: Joseph Alexander von Hübner (1830-92), Austrian diplomat, with his lithographed ex libris on all four pastedowns. - Last leaf of vol. 1 with backed loss. Occasionally more heavily browned or brown-spotted, some of the plates with small marginal tears, the double-paged plate vertically backed throughout with some browning in the fold, in the margins partly with small foxing spots. Overall, a well-preserved set of this work of significance in church history.
