Über frühere Kollegen gerät Salavin in den "Club des Lyonnais", einen kleinen, kommunistisch geprägten Zirkel, der sich in der Werkstatt eines Schusters trifft. There he observes the members' political debates, friendships, and conflicts, he feels sympathy for the people but cannot truly align himself with their ideological line. - Magnificent master binding by Saulnier, who took over the workshop in 1923 as the successor to the bookbinder Guérin.
