Lot 508 Aloysius Bertrand. Gaspard de la Nuit. …
Paris, Ambroise Vollard, 1904. 1 Bl., XXX, 310 S., 1 Bl. 4°. Lose in Kt.
Insgesamt sehr gut erhaltene Exemplare.
Modern Literature and Art – Loose in paper cover (browned, slightly bumped). - One of 100 copies printed on china. - With the suite of all text illustrations, initials, and vignettes on china. - Printed in black and red ink. - Each of the short pieces is introduced at the top by a small illustration, some extending beyond the frame, and is emphasized and structured by vignettes, initials, and coloring. The initials and vignettes thematically echo elements of the text. The design elements are playfully ornamental with floral motifs. - After the first edition of 1842, the work remained largely unnoticed. Only Baudelaire's enthusiasm for playful "l'art pour l'art" poetry in prose brought it attention and-at the beginning of this century-several new editions. With its free, unconventional book design that perfectly complements the text, this new edition is the most significant of its time. - Minimal foxing along the edges. Overall, very well-preserved copies.
